Paediatric Update

Another in our ongoing series of paediatric topics for GPs! This workshop, led by specialists from the expert team at the Royal Children’s Hospital, will provide you with an update on the latest trends in the care of children aged 0 to 12 years. Allergist and Immunologist Dr Jane Peak will provide up-to-date advice on the management of allergies and the atopic child, while Chief Registrar Margot Bosanquet will examine head shape and size variations in your infant patients.

Working Effectively with Gay & Lesbian Patients

Gay and lesbian people living with mental health issue are vulnerable and under served. Research shows that a large number do not disclose their sexual orientation and other critical information about their physical and psychological concerns to their GP and, that they have higher levels of suicidal symptoms and psychiatric co morbidity. Dr Paul Martin, Clinical Psychologist with the Centre for Human Potential, leads this seminar to assist you to increase your understanding about gender identity and sexuality issues and the challenges these people face. Managing Change Effectively

The third (and last) in our team work series will help you to understand the dynamics of change and to develop strategies that will ensure your team manages change effectively. CBT Mental Health Skills Training Level 2

Attend this level 2 mental health skills training and complete all required activities to register with the General Practice Mental Health Standards Collaboration as a GP provider of FPS and offer counselling therapies to your patients. Develop skills to manage the psychological treatment and management of depression, anxiety and somatic illness.

  • Behavioural interventions: stress management, sleep-wake cycle management, activity planning, graded muscle relaxation, slow breathing exercises.
  • Cognitive Therapy Strategies: CBT model, negative thoughts, thinking errors, core beliefs.
  • Structured problem solving: defining the problem, choosing solutions, putting solutions into action.

GPs must have completed a Level 1 mental health GPMHSC approved course along with Level 2 to register as a GP FPS provider and be working from an accredited practice to be claiming items 2721 or 2725.

Demystifying Dermoscopy

This dermoscopy hands-on workshop holds the record for being our fastest booked out workshop! Once again, Dr Richard Williams (Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology), Dr Peter Bourne and Dr Richard Johns (The Skin Cancer Society) are back to help you sharpen your skills in basic dermoscopy. Through case studies and demonstration you will cover basic dermoscopy skills including:

  • skin histopathology 
  • dermoscopic criteria and identifying melanomas

Childhood Obestiy & the Diabetes Epidemic

NPS visit

NPS visits are the most requested clinical education by GPs in our area!

Early use of insulin and oral antidiabetic drugs in type 2 diabetes
This program provides GPs with a chance to discuss the latest, independent, evidence-based information with a trained NPS facilitator.  Education visits will include information on the following:
  • current target HbA1C levels in type 2 diabetes
  • initiating insulin dosage regimens in combination with oral therapy
  • strategies to encourage and stress to patients the importance of lifestyle interventions in slowing and preventing disease progression
  • current evidence and controversy around the benefits and harms of glitazone use.

Visits are delivered in your practice, at a time to suit you. NPS education provides independent, evidence-based information about medicines for GPs and interested practices nurses.
