It's important to have a GP
Every year 80 per cent of the Australian population visits their GP. It’s important to find a GP you’re comfortable with and will build a good relationship with.
Most of us head straight to the GP with our colds, flu or for our children’s vaccinations but your doctor can also help you with ongoing illnesses such as asthma and diabetes and mental health issues such as depression or anxiety.
Your GP can provide routine health screening for diseases such as cervical cancer or bowel cancer and can provide you with support, information or referrals on a range of lifestyle issues such as smoking, alcohol consumption, diet and exercise.
If you haven't got a GP, ask family or friends if they can recommend a good doctor or call the general practices in your local area and ask a few questions. Some of these websites might also help you get started:
- QFinder - or phone 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84)
- Brisbane northern and western suburbs
- Moreton Bay General Practice Network Redcliffe, Caboolture area
- Brisbane South Division – general practice locations inner south suburbs
- SEAGP – general practice locations southern & bayside suburbs
- Yellow pages – search on Doctors-Medical Practitioners or Medical Centres
- Beyondblue (if you need a GP who understands mental health issues)
- Health Engine
Always call an ambulance - Triple Zero 000 - or go straight to the nearest emergency department if you or a family member are experiencing any life threatening symptoms such as signs of heart attack (shortness of breath, nausea, chest pain or feeling faint), uncontrollable bleeding, severe allergic reaction or if someone has suffered a head or spinal injury.
If you have any concerns about the health care provided to you by any medical practitioner or health service, contact the Health Quality and Complaints Commission for advice. The HQCC is an independent statutory body funded by the Queensland Government.
